Watched: INSIDE MAN
Another chance to use my new rating system (see previous post)...
Spike Lee and Russell Gewirtz? Double-bastards!! I deliberately avoided reading too much about the film beforehand, and glad I did. Way smarter than it needed to be for a mainstream thriller, and pleasingly so. I actually want to watch it again already -- what's all that about?
Strangely, both this film and THE SQUID AND THE WHALE feature actor Ken Leung in memorable bit parts. Looking forward to seeing this guy in bigger roles.
Finally, one of the many pleasures in this film was an (unintentional?) allusion to another film that's so good, I have to write about it, but since it might be a little bit of a spoiler, I'll stick it in the comments section...

Comments:
In one scene, the police are discussing options for storming the bank, but as each option is discusssed, we actually see it play out in increasingly over-the-top versions to comical effect.
However, the real kicker is that Willem Dafoe plays a police captain in this conversation which echoes his role in FINDING NEMO when his character Scar is explaining his plan to the rest of the Tank Gang on how they're going to bust out of the dentist's office.
I suppose it's sort of a reversal in the way that THE INCREDIBLES reworked a Samuel L. Jackson scene from DIE HARD 3 for the Frozone character. Gotta love those movie-geek in-jokes.
